The capital city is the departmet of Tumbes at 7 meters above se level. The total surface is 4 669,2 km2 that means about the 0,36 per cent of the extension of the country, and the second smallest department. This department has a total population of 174 300 inhabitants of which the 78,8 per cent live in urban areas. About a 31 per cent of the population is considered as Economically Active Population. Tumbes is divided in 3 provinces and 12 districts. It limits to the North with Ecuador, to the South wtith the department of Piura, to the East with Ecuador and to the West with the Pacific Ocean.
